Make one (m1)
This is one of the most common ways to increase one stitch in any area of your knitting. This technique will prevent holes in your work and will lay flat on the surface. Some people may not be aware that there is a left slant and a right slant to this technique. The result is very subtle but some of us are nitpickers with these things.
(Knit into the front and back of the loop)
We see this refered to in several patterns. When you create a new stitch this way the result is a slight bump on the surface of your work. For this reason we like to use the "make one" instead if ever possible.
Yarn over - (yo)
Yarn overs are most often used in lace work because they create a hole in your knitting when you knit or purl into this stitch on the next row.
Short rows
We put this video in the increase category because you can create more rows in one part of your piece than another in the same region; such as creating more length in the back of a sweater which alows for a rounded back. The heel of socks are often created with short rows. Large busted woman will also like to use short rows to create darts in the sides of sweaters. Even some people like to shape their shoulder using short rows.
